futurejournalismproject: Stephen Colbert on the Norway terror attack: “Some say these false reports of Muslim involvement were a widespread failure of the media, but I say that by going with their guts these journalists were able to get the story they wanted and scoop reality. And even if there was a rush to judgement, we must not repeat that mistake by rushing to accuracy.”  No doubt.

Quasi-judicial →
What’s a guy gotta do to get a drink on this patio? The Wild Onion in St. Paul was recently denied a permit to serve booze on their patio. Owners filed suit and say council member Dave Thune was out of line by talking about the request outside of council meetings. His behavior, the suit alleges, was “quasi-judicial” in that it calls into question his impartiality when he is...

Mother Jones magazine on Tumblr: The Teen Suicide... →
The first was TJ. Then came Samantha, Aaron, Nick, and Kevin. Over the past two years, a total of nine teenagers have committed suicide in a Minnesota school district represented by Rep. Michele Bachmann—the latest in May—and many more students have attempted to take their lives. State public…

On politics
Politics are absurd to me. Plotted frustratingly like a dream can be. And like a dream it is a world that is hard to enter and make much sense or difference. I’ve seen seemingly good people thwarted or diminished or opting for corruption. Politics is like heroin in what it does to people.  All those junkies in the House of Representatives just lounging in their seats, occasionally getting...

TOTN: After MSNBC host Keith Olbermann was suspended for making political contributions, journalist Ted Koppel criticized the lack of objectivity in the news, and looked backward toward the halcyon days of Murrow. But media critic Jeff Jarvis believes the old model is outdated.

Among the items Itunes can't replace
Now that I’ve had the experience of getting a laptop stolen, I can take it off my Bucket List.  The one time was sufficient.  I had at least two thousand purchases from Itunes that were backed up on a drive that has also fallen into the black market by this time.  Itunes will give me access to 800 items.  Here is a partial list of what I can’t access.  I think of it as a list of items...

Earlier in the week →
I’m writing a weekly column on politics for the Austinist.  It is a good group of people and they are working to increase their political coverage around the election.  Here is the link to my 2nd article for them.  It was the 3rd ranked article on Rick Perry in Yahoo News on Wednesday… beating the LA Times.  So clearly the Austinist folks have their SEO down.  I also filed a few news...

The Biz
So many people are full of crap and sadly they tend to drown out those that aren’t.  A good editor told me that sound journalism will always win out.  True enough for the journalism industry, maybe.  I’m curious about how that works in other industries.  Getting a glimpse into the real estate biz and finding no shortage of people full of crap there as well.  Must be human nature.
